Water deeply and less frequently as thorough watering encourages roots to grow deep, where the soil remains moist for longer.
- Plant a drought-tolerant indigenous garden which will flourish even under stressful drought conditions because it is able to adapt to irregular rainfall patterns.
- Focus on water-wise, indigenous perennials, annuals, ground covers, shrubs and trees. Plants with silvery, hairy, or fuzzy leaves (for example, Stachys byzantina) or leaves with a waxy coating (for example, Pelargonium peltatum) are good choices.
- Mulch plantings with an organic layer. Mulch slows evaporation by shading the soil. It also slows water runoff, restricts the growth of weeds (thus lessening competition from them for water), enriches the soil as it breaks down and improves plant health.
- Don’t prune, fertilise or apply pesticides during a severe drought. This will add additional stress to plants.
- Install a rainwater harvesting tank (see Saving water begins at home, below) to store water during the rainy winter months.
