Container plants typically need to be watered more frequently than bedding plants, and for this reason they’re not usually regarded as waterwise. But by following a few simple tips you can make your container plants better at conserving water – that’s good news for the environment and your water bill.
- Choose large pots with thick walls. The more soil they hold, the better they will be at absorbing water and the thick walls will help to keep the water inside.
- Avoid using hanging baskets during the summer months. They dry out very quickly and need frequent watering.
- Avoid large temperature fluctuations which can occur when containers are placed on hard surfaces like stone or cement.
- Group containers together for more efficient use of water.
- Add water-retaining granules to the soil to help keep moisture inside the pot.
- Enrich your potting soil with plenty of organic material like compost. The richer the soil, the more capable it is of retaining water.
- Move containers to a partially shady area when the weather warms up in summer. This way you’ll lose less moisture due to evaporation.
